What is SSEG?

Small-scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) involves solar PV systems on different properties (residential, commercial & industrial properties), syncing with the municipality’s grid.

Why is SSEG Municipal Registration & Approval Essential?

To ensure installations meet national regulations and are safe to operate, systems must be safely isolated from the municipal network to prevent electrocutions or accidents. Municipal by-laws require SSEG systems to be registered and approved. Failure to do so results in fines and power disconnection.
Additionally, the Eskom & Municipalities Electricity Supply By-law (2010, amended 2017) states that no consumer-provided electricity generation equipment can be connected without prior written consent from the Director of the EGD.

What is the process for SSEG Approval?

Application

The initial step is to submit an SSEG application form along with a single-line diagram to the municipality. The application must include the details of the Electrical Engineer.

Successful Application Confirmation

“Permission to install” Letter will be issued if the application is successful.

Electrical Certificate of Compliance (COC)

Electrical Certificate of Compliance (COC) is done by a registered electrical contractor.

On-Site Inspection

After the installation is complete, an inspection must be conducted to ensure compliance with SANS 10142 and NRS 097.

Commissioning Sign-Off

After the entire installation complies with these regulations, a Professional Electrical Engineer can sign off the Commissioning Form.

Final Submission

The Commissioning Form, single line diagram, Electrical Certificate of Compliance (COC), and Supplemental Contract are then submitted to the relevant municipality.

Process Completion

The municipality issues a Final Commissioning Approval Letter when all documents are submitted, and the installation complies with all regulations.
The SSEG process is then completed.
